I really enjoyed this -- the photos and writing -- and the introspection. One question, were these taken with the Sony or the iPhone?

Thanks Adam. These were taken with my Sony a7iii. I could have used my iPhone. I’ve been using both recently.

Ah, suspected that, given the shallow depth of field in the last photo and angle of view felt like they could be taken on a 50 mm lens. But then I have no idea what the iPhone can do these days ... Thanks!

The cameras on phones can take pretty impressive photos. I tried using just my iPhone to photograph a rally recently. it did a good job, but I managed to overwhelm it — it overheated and didn't manage to save about half the photos I took.

Wow, I never would have imagined these new phones would overheat and fail to record images. I mostly use very old digital cameras (some that save to floppy disk and mini-cd https://www.flickr.com/photos/199598109@N05/ ) and the main problem I have is the mini-disc cameras failing to record from time to time, but then those devices are more than 20 years old. I have to say, I like your work with the iPhone and Sony, but the Sony somehow is better in my view, but that could be because of my entirely unreasonable bias against phones. I can't wait to see the next batch of rally photos!

I like your description of photographs you notice. That’s how I like to approach photography - it’s a good reason to go for a long walk.

I particularly like 54a, Hedge.

Thanks, Andrew. I could start a Substack just about hedges. They are a feature here. On the Canterbury plain north of Dunedin and south of Christchurch, there are some very long, high, straight hedges. They serve not only as windbreaks, but of our attempts to shape nature to fit our orthogonal way of being in the world.

Wonderful words and photos, if only all street photographers thought like this... Loved this piece!

Thanks for the kind comment, Xavie. Street photography will never make me wealthy but it might make me healthy.

Thanks, Marcel. I recently bought a printer and am looking forward to doing g some physical, visual shuffling. Your recent writing will be helpful. I tend to focus on what I’ve shot most recently and don’t step back and review and reflect much. Being able to make prints easily and at a low cost should help.

I'm in the "notice" team! I love to bring my camera for a walk and notice the world around me ! This is magical. Brilliant edition!

That’s kind of you. Maybe we should have Team Notice T-Shirts. We’re people who notice before we are people who photograph.
